Ministering to Persons Experiencing Same-Sex Attraction

Father Livingston is a priest of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis and is the chaplain for the ministry Faith in Action, the Minnesota chapter of the group Courage.  In his talk, Father discusses his experiences ministering those having same sex attractions, not as a psychologist or therapist, but as a Catholic priest.

In the first 40 minutes, Father reviews three basic issues- attraction, identity and behavior.  In his experiences, the attraction is not chosen, it is discovered.  The behavior is the way people respond to that attraction and is a free choice.  Identity becomes a big issue for people with a same sex attraction, trying to answer the question, “Who am I?”.

Father discusses the loneliness that is experienced with this attraction and that Faith in Action doesn’t try to change the attraction, but helps a person to see how they can live a chaste life.  He reads a few testimonials from those experiencing same sex attraction so we can get a better understanding of their thoughts.

The last hour of the video is Father’s response to our questions, many regarding the truth of our faith and how Catholic High Schools can help those experiencing same sex attraction.
